Ornately bound in hand-painted celluloid with a floral motif, metalwork bands and cross, purple velvet corners, with attached metal devotional pendant and clasp, all edges gilt. Few minor scuffs and some light soiling to binding, upper board slightly warped along spine is common for these bindings. Title page lightly edge chipped else clean internally.
Beautiful Slovak devotional from the era of Pope Leo XIII, with gatherings of prayers and litanies, and nicely illustrated. This copy is ornately bound in celluloid, perhaps for a First Communion, Confirmation, or wedding. A vivid keepsake of Central European folk Catholic material culture, and very much a display object.
