Frontis portraits, plates, large fold-out map of the U.S. territories at rear of Vol 1. Presentation bindings of two different shades of brown morocco, elaborately tooled in blind and lettered in gilt, gilt-tooled turn ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Beautiful, signed presentation set of James G. Blaine's historical and political memoir covering roughly the period from Lincoln's election in 1860 through the end of Reconstruction.  Blaine was one of the most powerful Republican politicians of the time, serving in the House of Representatives from 1863-76 and as senator from '76-81.  He was Secretary of State under Garfield, Arthur, and Harrison.  He narrowly lost the presidential election to Cleveland in 1884.  This memoir serves as one of the earliest, substantial insider histories of Reconstruction-era Congress.
