London: Printed by J.M. for John Starkey, 1671. First edition. 8vo, [3], 111, [2], 101, [2]pp. License preceding title, section title for Samson Agonistes, errata leaf, N3 a cancel. Second issue with "loah" corrected to "loth" on pg 67. 18th century Cambridge binding, panels tooled in blind, gilt spine lettering. Few contemporary doodles and ink blots to license leaf, minor worming to upper margin of pages 3-12, not affecting text, trimmed close along top affecting the running title just in D2. Otherwise, a clean, near fine copy in lovely Cambridge binding, lightly worn.

Beautiful copy of Milton's "Brief Epic," which served as a direct sequel to Paradise Lost.  The work, in just four books, focuses on Jesus' later temptations by Satan in the wilderness and subsequent triumphs, emphasizing faith and spiritual strength.  Milton's centering on inward spiritual struggle in this text had a profound influence on later English religious and moral poetry.
