Time and Trouble Will Tame a Young Man... [Poster]

[Houston]: [American Institute of Graphic Arts], [1999]. 35x24" silkscreen poster, pink and black on thick stock, edges untrimmed. Few light edge and stress wrinkles to the upper portion of the image, smudges to verso. Near fine. Rolled as found.

Striking and unique poster by Lana Rigsby, internationally renowned graphic designer, president and director for Rigsby Hull, and founding member of the AIGA Texas Chapter.  This design is from the 1999 exhibition and auction, "Do You Read Me? Texas Designers on Texas Writers" organized by the Houston AIGA and benefitting the Houston Read Commission.  The designs were hand pulled in editions of 1 for the auction.  While details on the event are scant, we note another poster by Ayesha Hakki using Steve Wilson's "River in the Dark" was part of this series, as were the pairings of Chris Hill and Joe Nick Patoski; DJ Stout and Bud Shrake; and Lowell Williams and Mimi Swartz.

Rigsby's design is a tribute to the women in Larry McMurtry's novel, and features a quote adapted from Dorothy L. Sayers, "Time and trouble will tame a young man, but a woman is uncontrollable by any earthly force."

We find no record of this poster in OCLC nor elsewhere.  A compelling and unique graphic work situated at the intersection of late-20th-century American design, Texas literary culture, and feminist interpretation, by one of the most influential American graphic designers of her generation.
