Manuscript Archive of Children's Stories
[New York]: [Ca. 1940?]. Manuscript. 8.5x11" sheets, 98pp including ten original typed drafts and two photocopies, some with title pages (1-2 each) + most with 1 p. typed commentary and copious handwritten notes and amendments. All very good: some light scuffing, edge wear, spotting and paperclip scarring, with a few scattered small stains.
Tremendous collection of early writing from a notable woman in the field of pulp science fiction editing and publishing, Cylvia Kleinman (Marguelies). Kleinman married Leo Marguelies in 1937, who was co-founder and editor at Standard Magazines. Marguelies and Kleinman went on to found their own company, Renown Publications, which would publish several big-name pulps including Weird Tales, Charlie Chan Mystery Magazine, Zane Grey Western Magazine, and Mike Shayne Mystery Magazine. Kleinman would later edit Satellite Science Fiction magazine from 1957-1959, which included the original version of Philip K. Dick's first novel, The Cosmic Puppets, as well as works by Algis Budrys, Jack Vance, Isaaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and others.
This archive includes twelve manuscripts for ten individual titles of children's stories by Kleinman, all likely unpublished, and with the commentary and a few handwritten notes, seemingly composed for a class. The stories are imaginative and include characters ranging from young genius siblings to anthropomorphic doors.
Leo Margulies' papers are housed at the University of Oregon and include manuscripts of his stories as well as correspondence of both Margulies and Kleinman with other publishers and writers. We find no record of any collections of Kleinman's work, published or otherwise, in OCLC nor online.
