The City that Has Fallen

San Francisco: The Book Club of California, 1933. First separate edition, limited to 350 copies. Slim 8vo, [2, 13, [1]pp. Illustrated title in two colors. Inscription from Mrs. Rosalie Stern dated in 1933 on ffep just below the embossed ownership stamp of George Dennison. Silk backed orange paste paper over boards, spine lettered in black. Some fraying at spine ends, else a near fine copy.

Association copy of this nicely printed remembrance of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire.  Reedy first published his poignant article on the city's resilience in Reedy's Mirror on April 26, 1906.  This edition was printed by Johnck and Seeger for the Book Club of California in 1933 in a limited edition.

This copy has a presentation by Rosalie Stern (1869-1956) who was the wife of Sigmund Stern, president of Levi Strauss and Company.  Rosalie converted her house into a Red Cross factory following the disaster in 1906, helping many residents displaced by the destruction.  She later served during WWI, becoming the first woman associate field director for military relief, working at Camp Remont Base Hospital in association with the Red Cross. She was also a civic leader in San Francisco, forming the Garden Hospital Commitee for the US Veterans Hospital in 1918, and later was appointed president of the San Francisco Playground Commission.

Also of note is the ownership stamp of Los Gatos artist, George Dennison.  An interesting book with ties to the 1906 disaster.
