Vienna: Gerlach & Schenk, [1886]. First edition. 42x31cm, 52 numbered sheets including 50 tinted zincograph plates plus title and half title, laid loose in board portfolio with cloth back. Scattered foxing, toning, and smudging to plates, almost solely marginal. Portfolio split down spine, worn along edges and with soiling. A very good, complete set.

Wonderful portfolio of designs by the influential German sculptor and painter, Franz von Stuck (1863-1928) who later became known for his paintings of mythological scenes.  This group of plates contains proto-Jugendstil designs for menus, wine lists, greeting cards, programs, diplomas, and other printed items.  Gerlach published several of these portfolios, which were to be used as references by those in the graphic printing trades, rather than fine art collections.   

A lovely example of art nouveau and pre-Jugendstil design by a central figure in German Symbolism. Item #9176
