Prague: Symposin, 1925. First edition of 400 copies. 8vo, 147, [4]pp. In Czech. Title in three colors, frontis and vignette illustrations by Jan Konůpek. Bonded leather with ornately tooled covers colored in a darker brown, gilt spine lettering. Ffep toned and chipped along fore edge, few scuffs to boards. Very good.
Beautiful rendering of Flaubert's unfinished philosophical text which he intended to be a French Faust. The title character is often identified with the Devil, serving as the embodiment of Satanism; scientific rationalism being superior to religious faith. The haunting images by Konůpek well-illustrate this representation.
There was also an edition published in a cloth binding. From the colophon: Translated by Vojtěška Vaněčková, number 15 in the Symposion series, binding design by Konůpek, bound by Z. and J. Nožička, Cochin type, printed by Průmyslová Tiskárna in the winter of 1925.
