Anne Rice's spiritual and religious journey is intricately tied to her writing. Rice grew up in the Catholic Church, but identified as atheist for most of her adult life. She returned to the Catholicism in 1998 following a near death experience. In 2004, she nearly died again from an intestinal blockage, a common complication of gastric bypass surgery which she'd had the previous year. Although she was strong in her Catholic convictions, she did not agree with Church's stances on social issues - particularly marriage equality and women's health. Item #8947
