The Daemon: A Guide to Your Extraordinary Secret Self
London: Arcturus Publishing Limited, 2012. 8vo. 336pp. Illustrated paperback wraps, some creasing and minor corner wear else near fine. This copy from the library of author Anne Rice, signed and dated 2020 on the title ffep, with several passages underlined and ample margin notes throughout the text.
Anne Rice's spiritual and religious journey is intricately tied to her writing. Rice grew up in the Catholic Church, but identified as atheist for most of her adult life. She returned to the Catholicism in 1998 following a near death experience. In 2004, she nearly died again from an intestinal blockage, a common complication of gastric bypass surgery which she'd had the previous year. Although she was strong in her Catholic convictions, she did not agree with Church's stances on social issues - particularly marriage equality and women's health.
Rice's writings contain several variations of daemons/daimons/demons as supernatural beings that are tied to her characters in one way or another. Peake's book suggests that all conscious beings consist of two separate consciousnesses, the Daemon being the higher self with knowledge of the future. On the half title page, Rice wrote "Fascinating author. Fascinating book." It seems she was fascinated as she dated passages both in September of 2020 and again in December 2020. It is heavily annotated, often disagreeing with the author or questioning his theories. Item #8926
