The Divine Milieu

Portland, Oregon: Sussex Academic Press, 2004. 8vo. 123pp. Near fine in very good jacket save a closed tear near the base of spine. This copy from the library of author Anne Rice, inscribed and dated 2004 on the half-title page, with several passages underlined and tabbed throughout the text.

The inscription reads, "9-11-04 - The anniversary of the dreadful terrorist attack on America. I turn to this new h.c. from the old paperback of this work which I've only first discovered, and the poetry of which has left me reeling. There are important notes in that paperback. I keep it with me. Teilhard has come to me at the perfect time. My notes in this book will obviously be confessions, very brief, in a spiritual journey."

Anne Rice's spiritual and religious journey is intricately tied to her writing. Rice grew up in the Catholic Church, but identified as atheist for most of her adult life. She returned to the Catholicism in 1998 following a near death experience. In 2004, she nearly died again from an intestinal blockage, a common complication of gastric bypass surgery which she'd had the previous year. Although she was strong in her Catholic convictions, she did not agree with Church's stances on social issues - particularly marriage equality and women's health. Item #8918
