Washington, D.C. Women's National Democratic Club, 1975. Bifolium program, 16x12cm, [4]pp. Printed in dark blue on light blue stock. Signed by Jordan, Lloyd Bentsen, and one other attendee. Vertical down the middle, some toning. Very good.
Historic piece of memorabilia from the Women's National Democratic Club signed by Barbara Jordan. Jordan had, just 2 years prior, become the first southern African American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. She also served in the Texas Senate from 1967-1973, and was the first African American to do so since the Reconstruction.
Jordan was the recipient at this Gala of the first Woman of the Year Award handed out by the WNDC, which was founded in 1922 to provide a social setting in which women could engage in political discussion and organize on behalf of the Democratic Party. It was one of the earliest efforts to organize Democratic women in the capital.
