Artist [Original Calligraphy Broadside]
Santa Barbara, CA: 1977. 15x20" red paint and black ink in calligraphy on British handmade paper. Few pools and blotches in the large red "ARTIST", few other miniscule blemishes and some light edge wear to paper.
Fine original calligraphy from American artist, printer, and designer, David Mekelburg (1937-2010). Mekelburg apprenticed under Ade Bethune, Sr. Corita Kent, and others and later conducted workshops worldwide on calligraphy. He designed some 700 cards for Conception Abbey Press before starting his own greeting card company in the early 1980s in California. This example titled "Artist" quotes Germaine Greer, Jonathan Benthall, and Rainer Maria Rilke, and is written out for Phyllis Kavin, wife of Mel Kavin of Kater-Crafts bindery. Item #8244
