Oigan! Hermogenes Fantoche y Garza Presenta El Colmo de Tauromaquia! [Bullfight Poster]

[Los Angeles]: Festoon Films, 1963. Poster, 22x14cm, color lithograph. Nibbled along top edge, just reaching into the blue border. Some toning and staining to edges, few light wrinkles. Colors remain bright. Very good.

Psychedelic parody bullfight poster from 1960s Los Angeles, by Festoon Films.  We find in the Los Angeles Evening Citizen News in July 1963, the duo of John Paul Jones and John E. Hitesman founded the business in Hollywood under the fictitious name of Festoon Films, and it seems they simply produced a few of these types of posters for Aztec Dances, Hippie Hootennanys, Surfaris, Hot-Jogging, and other such fabricated events.

John Paul Jones (1924-1999) was a painter, printmaker, and educator in Los Angeles who gained National recognition for his art around the time Festoon Films was formed.  In 1963, he was the first pick of the eminent curator Una E. Johnson to inaugurate the Brooklyn Museum’s solo exhibition series on distinguished contributors to the media of drawings and prints in the United States.  So, it would seem that Festoon Films was quite short lived as Jones's career took off.

In any event, this is one of the more scarce images from Jones and Hitesman.
