Young People's Concerts

The Young People's Concerts were already a tradition when Leonard Bernstein became Music Director of the New York Philharmonic in 1958. However, Bernstein's expertise and charm turned the concert series into a nationally acclaimed television series that was translated into other languages, syndicated to forty countries, and won 5 Emmy awards. He continued to lead these programs until 1972, through his sabbatical and even after stepping down as director in 1969, leading a total of fifty-three Young People's Concerts during those fourteen years, and covering a broad range of subjects.
Bernstein planned the Young People's Concerts based on the Philharmonic's regular concert season repertoire. He wrote the scripts himself, revising and streamlining as necessary to make the program accessible for young people and seasoned symphony fans alike. These scripts found their way into book form in 1961 and again as a revised and expanded edition in 1970 which includes ten text transcriptions.
This copy is signed and inscribed by Bernstein on the ffep. The top right corner says "for David + Rachel, October 22, 1976." The inscription reads, "Again for David + Rachel, Best, Lenny Bernstein '88." David and Rachel were the children of Richard Kanter who played oboe for the Chicago Symphony for over 40 years.
