Set of 18 Rehabilitation Monographs for the Education of Wounded Soldiers after Discharge

Washington: The American Red Cross / Government Printing Office, 1918-1919. Trial Editions. 18 staple bound pamphlets in printed self wrappers, from roughly 16 to 70pp each. Illustrations, photographs, diagrams, charts. Generally very good with toning and smudging, few with scattered markings internally.

Set of government publications from the Federal Board for Vocational Education which was formed in 1917 by the Smith-Hughes Act to promote nationwide vocational education.  Most of these monographs were part of a joint series with the Office of the Surgeon General and the Bureau of War-Risk Insurance specifically for disabled soldiers who were confined to general hospitals after their discharge from service.  Includes:

1. Part-Time Trade and Industrial Education, Trade and Industrial Series No. 3, 1918
2.  Buildings and Equipment for Schools and Classes in Trade and Industrial Subjects, Trade and Industrial Series  4, 1918.
3.  English for Non-English Speaking Men Illiterate in their Native Languages, Joint Series 4, 1919
4.  Beginners' Course in English for Non-English Speaking Men Illiterate in their Native Languages, Joint Series 5, 1919
5.  Advance Course in English for Foreign-Born Men Literate in their Native Languages, Joint Series 6, 1919
6.  Elementary Writing and Reading for English-Speaking Illiterates, Joint Series 7, 1919
7.  Woodworking for the Poultry Farm, Joint Series 28, 1919
8.  Handwork Necessary to Prepare Shoes for Machine Finishing, Joint Series 30, 1919
9.  Starting Up and Shutting Down the Steam Plant, Joint Series 36, 1919
10.  Drafting: Elementary Machine Drawing, Joint Series 39, 1919
11.  Woodworking: Care of Woodworking Tools, Joint Series 41, 1919
12.  Machine Shop Practice: Mathematics for the Universal Milling Machine, Joint Series 48, 1919
13.  Bookkeeping: Retail Business in Double Entry for Professional Accountants, Joint Series 49, 1919
14.  Drafting: Machine Details, Joint Series 50, 1919
15.  Drafting: Thread Work, Joint Series 51, 1919
16.  Drafting: Blue Print Reading for Carpenters, Joint Series 53, 1919
17.  Auto Mechanics: Engine Repairing - Section II, Joint Series 61, 1919
18.  Bibliography: Books for Students and Instructors in United States Army Hospitals, Joint Series 66, 1919

It's interesting that all of the joint series are marked "trial copy" and several are fairly scarce.  Perhaps this was quite a short lived program, and unnecessary after 1919.  In any event, an interesting collection illustrating America's effort to more widely spread trade education during and after the War.
