Black Mountain Review #7, Autumn 1957

[Black Mountain, NC]: Black Mountain College, 1957. First edition. 8vo, 240pp. Signed by Gary Snyder and Michael McClure at their entries. Photos, illustrations. Perfect bound in publisher's illustrated wrappers by Edward Corbett. Spine cocked, wrappers with some foxing and toning. Joel Oppenheimer's name neatly trimmed out of the table of contents. Very good.

The final issue of the influential review published by Creeley out of the progressive liberal arts school, Black Mountain College which actually closed the year prior.  The journal was printed in Spain, where Creeley was producing his Divers Press books.  Allen Ginsberg and Charles Olson were contributing editors, with Ginsberg, Kerouac, Snyder, Denise Levertov, Judson Crews, and others publishing pieces in the number.

Issue number 7 was by all accounts the most important, with a diversity not seen in the previous issues.  That diversity was thanks to Ginsberg contributing as editor, giving the number a Beat-centirc feel.   It is also in this issue we find the first appearance of William S. Burroughs's Naked Lunch.  This excerpt is actually an early hybrid of what would become Queer, and Burroughs was still hiding behind the pseudonym of William Lee, under which he wrote Junkie.

Issue 7 is quite a bit scarcer than the others, and even more so signed.
