Los Angeles: N.p., 1927. First edition. 8vo, 96pp. Photographs. Inscribed by Oxnam to Sidney Gamble and dated in the year of publication on the ffep. Cloth backed green paper boards with printed label on front cover. Some toning to boards and spine, corners lightly worn. Very good.

Privately published book from the Methodist Bishop and social reformer, Garfield Bromley Oxnam (1891-1963).  The work collects a series of short essays on religion and politics in the Soviet Union written after Oxnam had visited there just prior to the famine and purges of the 1930s.

Oxnam was a central figure in social reform in Los Angeles, presiding over the multiethnic Church of All Nations and fighting for racial inclusion and immigrant worker rights.  This book is inscribed to photographer, Sidney D. Gamble (1890-1968) who in 1919, photographed the May Fourth student demonstrations, and then conducted the surveys for the important Peking: A Social Survey (1921).  Oxnam's inscription thanks Gamble for a photograph included in this collection, which shows Kirby Page, Dean William Scarlett and Oxnam viewing the Tischendorf Manuscript in the Leningrad Library.

A fine association copy of an uncommon title.
