Publisher's gray cloth stamped in orange, black, and gray, with orange lettering on spine. Illustrated endpapers. Cloth worn along edges, and lightly frayed at spine ends and corners. Few stray scuffs to boards. Contemporary gift inscription to front endpaper, dated 1903. Additional child's doodling and ownership signature all in pencil, which could be erased, on front endpaper and pastedown. Otherwise, clean, complete, and sound internally. A very good copy.
First state of this classic children's fantasy published 3 years after The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Braunworth & Co. imprint on copyright page, text illustration upside down on pg 238. A solid copy in better condition than is often found for this title.
