Harper Woods, MI: The Adagio Press. 14 envelopes containing one or more publications, prospectuses, broadsides, etc. from the press. Generally fine condition with light wear to original printed envelopes.

A fine collection of publications from Adagio: The Private Press of Leonard F. Bahr (1934-1992), who ran the press out of his home in Harper Woods, Michigan from 1956 until his death.  This collection was owned by fine press bibliophile and Yellow Barn Press bibliographer, Jack Walsdorf of Portland, Oregon.  Several of the pieces are inscribed to him by Bahr, displaying a long and warm friendship between the two.  We have cited the bibliography of the press, Adagio: A Checklist, compiled by Wesley B. Tanner and Eric C. Alstrom where applicable.  This publication lists entries chronologically, with ephemera unnumbered.  

Typographia 1 and Typographia 2, 1976 and 1979.  Each number 4 of approximately 325 copies, each signed or inscribed by Bahr to Walsdorf.  Includes announcement for 1, along with a TN and mailing slip from Bahr promising the prospectus, as well as a purpose statement from the press.   Checklist 34 w/ ephemera, 37.


William Blake, Proverbs of Hell, 1982.  Number 37 of approximately 200 copies, signed by Bahr and with invoice from the press laid in.  Checklist 41.

A Manner of Printing, 1973.  Number 27 of approximately 300 copies, signed by Bahr.  Checklist 29.

Typographic Embellishers, 1968.  Number 104 of 248 copies.  "A Word About Adagio Press" slip laid in.  Checklist 20.  

The Collected Ephemera of the Adagio Press, 1972.  Number 146 of 153 sets.  Contains 6 bifolia publications.  Checklist 28. 

The Simplest and perhaps the truest..., 1976.  Bifolium with verses from WIll Ransom, Lewis Mumford, and Shakespeare.   Inscribed by Bahr to Walsdorf. Not in checklist.

10 Adagio Pamphlets, hand labeled envelope actually containing 9.  Contains 7 small broadsides and two pamphlets: The Diary of a Private Press, 1967  and Interpretations & Insinuations, 1965 number 383 of an unstated limitation.  Checklist 15, 18, 31eph, 43eph, and others.

James Dickey, The Strength of Fields, 2 copies, 1977.  One copy signed by Dickey as issued, the other a printer's copy inscribed by Bahr to Walsdorf.  Checklist 36.
