Two Original Typescripts of Unpublished Articles [with] Autograph Cover Letter Signed

[Miami?]: [Ca. 1974]. Two carbon typescripts, [2] and 4pp, both stapled at upper corner. One with a couple minor corrections in Beck's hand. ALS, 5 lines on Beck's stationary and signed "C.C." Toning and some smudging to scripts, with transmittal folds. Letter in fine condition.

Small manuscript archive from the Captain Marvel artist, Charles Clarence Beck (1910-1989), from the files of the important Comic Book collector and publisher, Bruce Hamilton (1932-2005).  

"Why are Cartoonist [sic] the Rodney Dangerfields of the Publishing Business?"
Script of a talk given at a convention by Beck, Hamilton, and Don Newton.  A very interesting piece, about how comic artists "don't get no respect."  Beck had recently been hired by DC to return to Shazam! and write his own scripts, but after the publisher heavily edited his first attempt, Beck quit and retired.  This talk is full of vitriol against publishers and the industry in general.  

"Ways to Put the Reader's Imagination to Work"
This set of 10 rules speaks more about the specifics of creating the art for comic books.  Very specific instructions including the use of off-panel sound effects, motion, action, captions and footnotes, viewpoints, etc.  

The cover letter, which goes with the Rodney Dangerfield talk mentions sending Hamilton a painting along with the script and is dated in 1974. Item #6234
