Halifax: M. Garlick, [Ca. 1840]. 4to, 21x13cm, [1], 410, [1], 2-317pp. Two parts in one, complete with 52 hand colored botanical plates and 7 sepia anatomical plates. Half blind tooled and gilt stamped calf, marbled paper boards, expertly rebacked with original spine laid down. Foxing throughout, final leaf of index chipped along edge, else clean internally and very good.

Complete, beautiful, and somewhat uncommon 19th century edition of Culpeper's herbal, originally published as The English Physician in 1652.  Its longevity in print, through many editions and revisions is a tribute to its popularity and lasting usage in Britain and elsewhere.


This, perhaps a student's copy, has laid in a strip of paper with some fine alphabetical penmanship examples.
