A Catalogue of an Exhibition of Memorable Documents in American History from Columbus to Hoover

New York: The Rosenbach Company, 1931. First edition. 8vo, ix, 107pp. Blue paper over stiff wrappers, original printed cover label, and later printed spine label. Signature of Elmer Adler to inside front cover. Some soiling to wraps, light chipping at spine ends. Very good.

A grand catalogue of an exhibition of seminal documents in U.S. history by the Rosenbach company from April-June in 1931.  The introduction explains how institutions have been late to the game as well as underfunded in regards to acquiring these important documents, which have therefore been snatched up by private collectors, and advantageous dealers with deep pockets, such as the Doctor.

This unique copy bears the ownership signature of graphic artist and book designer, Elmer Adler (1884-1962).  Adler was also a collector and published The Colophon: A Book Collectors' Quarterly starting in 1930.  Adler has printed a fine, original spine label for this catalogue in a pleasing type, although entirely different than the cover label.
