Are You a Bromide? or, The Sulphitic Theory
New York: B. W. Huebsch, 1906. First edition. 18x12cm, 63pp. Printed in two colors throughout. Signed by Burgess and with a doodle of his monogram on the ffep in blue. Paper over boards, illustrated label on front. Soiling and toning to exterior, few neat marginal annotations and corrections in ink, light foxing to preliminaries, else clean internally. Very good.
An expanded version of "The Sulphitic Theory," an essay originally published in The Smart Set by artist-humorist Frank Gelett Burgess (1866-1951). A signed copy, finely designed and printed, and the first edition in book form. The humorous work is credited with coining the term "bromide" to describe someone as an unoriginal dullard.
