Devers Blend Coffee Label
Portland: Closset & Devers, [ca.1905]. Single sheet label/packaging, very thin tissue paper, printed in brown and yellow with text and floral design, 34x34cm. Nearly fine with some bends to corners, creases from folding, and a few spots of soiling and foxing. Incredible survivor, an advertising piece of packaging from Closset & Devers, one of the oldest coffee, tea, and spice firms in Portland, Oregon. Touted as "The World's Finest," Devers Blend was trademarked by the company in 1898 and heavily advertised in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho around the turn of the century. Likely lining a box or serving as some sort of packaging, this thin paper proof of purchase urges one to "Buy it! Try it! Prove it!" Closset & Devers was formed in 1883 when Arthur H. Devers moved to Portland and bought out half of the existing Closset Brothers firm, becoming the president. The company became one of the first in the area to make use of the vacuum coffee can.
