The High Court of Justice; Comprising Memoirs of the Principal Persons who Sat in Judgement on King Charles the First, and Signed his Death Warrant...
London: John Caulfield, 1820. First edition. 4to, xi, [1], 112, [4]pp. Index. 24 fine engraved portraits, each within a border of skulls and bones, etc. This copy, unusually, has all the plates hand colored in a pinkish red (to resemble blood?). Original drab boards, rebacked with a heavy tan paper strip and 3 spine labels. Corners of boards worn and chipped. Clean internally and very good.
An interesting copy of an interesting book, which contains engravings and biographies of the Charles I Regicides. Caulfield's writing is mostly concerned with the details of whether the individual signed the death warrant, whether they fled, were captured, or surrendered, and if/how they were tried and executed, often in vivid detail. This copy unique with the hand coloring. A grisly book. Item #10160
