In Peanut Land
New York: R. F. Fenno & Company, 1907. First edition. 8vo. Unpaginated. Tan cloth backed illustrated paper boards, illustrated endpapers, pages toned, very good+. In illustrated jacket with spine and edge wear, moisture ring on front cover, still very good.
Rare early children’s fantasy by illustrator and cartoonist Eva Dean, issued in 1907 and expanded from her whimsical “Peanut People” comic feature that appeared in the Sunday magazine section of the New York Herald. The Herald not only ran the strip but also held the copyright to the book, suggesting a close connection between Dean and the paper’s early comics department. The feature appeared under varying titles including The Peanuts and The Peanut People, and predates Charles Schulz’s famous use of the name by decades. It is filled with Dean’s anthropomorphic peanut characters, playful verse, and charming illustrations.
Surviving copies in the original dust jacket are distinctly uncommon. Scarcely held, with only 5 listings in OCLC as of May 2026.
