Plates, illustrations, photos. Sample copy with red leather binidng sample at rear. Both bound in publisher's green cloth illustrated in black, red, and gilt. Larger volume with red page edges. Ownership signature single section of underlining in the larger work. Cloth worn and frayed at edges and spine ends. Generally very good.

Extravagant subscription publication along with salesman's sample of this comparative religion work from Frank S. Dobbins (1855-1916) who wrote several books on the subject.  This volume explores pagan gods, devils, demons, and evil spirits worshipped by mankind throughout the ages and up to the end of the 19th century.  It also covers idols, temples, shrines, sacred places, incantations, sacrifices, customs, legends and myths, and other subjects.  

The sample consists of specimen pages, with publishing proposal and pages for recording subscriptions.  Perhaps this book didn't sell well as we've found almost as many instances of the sample book in the trade as the full publication.  A lovely and scarce set. Item #7462
