The Council of Seven Lights [Signed Association Copy]

Los Angeles: DeVorss & Co., 1958. First edition. 8vo, 156pp. Illustrations, folding diagrams. Inscribed by Van Tassel to Ruth B. Drown on the ffep and dated in 1962. Publisher's blue cloth boards lettered in gilt in illustrated jacket. Gilt dulled else a near fine copy in very good jacket, underside toned and with chipping and a few edge tears along top. Laid in is a hand-addressed envelope to Ruth Drown from an "H. Abel" in Los Angeles, postmarked in 1964.

An intriguing association copy of this classic parapsychological work from the American contactee, George W. Van Tassel (1910-1978).  This dense and complex text is sort of a compilation of ideas and principles gleaned from Van Tassel's communications with "organized Intelligences of other places," which had starting in 1953, developed his "ability to awaken the nearly dormant consciousness to thoughts existing throughout time."

Sometime in the 50s, Van Tassel founded his own "science philosophy organization" called the Ministry of Universal Wisdom.  In the org's official newsletters, we find mention of the research and work of an alternative medicine guru from Colorado, Ruth. B Drown (1891-1965).  Drown practiced radionics, inventing her own curative devices called the Homo-Vibra Ray instruments, one of which was called the "Tunnel of Love".  These were eventually seized by the State Food and Drug Inspector after an undercover sting operation.  Charges were brought and a trial date set, but Drown died before it could be held.

The inscription from Van Tassel links the two figures in their enlightened, higher thinking:

"To Ruth Drown from Van, G. W. Van Tassel, In mutual understanding of many things, 11-17-62."

A substantial association copy of a scarce book, illustrating ties between metaphysical and quackery circles in the 50s and 60s.
