Archive of Letters, Ephemera, and Clippings from Mel Kavin

[Laguna Beach]: 1974-1996. Approximately 50 items housed in two manila folders with Kavin's handwritten labels: WARD RITCHIE: Letters and Brochures and Articles. Generally near fine or better, with a few items toned or with minor wear.

Wonderful archive of printed materials and correspondence from the files of Mel Kavin of Kater-Crafts bindery in Pico Rivera which document his relationship with master fine printer of Los Angeles, Ward Ritchie (1905-1996).

Includes 10 handwritten letters from Ritchie on his Laguna Verde Imprenta and other stationaries, dates ranging from 1975-1993.  Various projects and articles are discussed, many thank-you's are exchanged and gatherings mentioned.  Of note are the earliest letter, from 1974, likely one of the first communications between the two.  Ritchie attaches a bio and mentions he has just retired to Laguna Beach where he plans to "begin experimental books on a 1835 hand press."

Another letter has a rough sketch of an original Bruce Rogers mark on verso for Kavin's stamping die.  Perhaps the most important letter has attached two sketched designs by Ritchie for a project which would be The Poet and The Printers (1980), and includes a printer's proof bifolium, signed by Ritchie.

The 20 or so ephemeral items include some beautifully printed items such as Gloria Stuart's "Poem for the Bonnie Laddie," a birthday card from  her Imprenta Glorias for Ritchie on his 95th.  From the same celebration are a toast printed by Vance Gerry, and the Zamorano Club program and invitation for the event.  From the same year are two items jointly printed by Stuart and Ritchie, being invitations to an exhibition at Occidental College Library.

Also included is the scarce set of 9 invitations, each by a different printer: William Murray Cheney, Grant Dahlstrom, Vance Gerry, and others.

Another uncommon item which is present is an offprint of sorts printed and signed by Ritchie, being a signature [12]pp from The Colophon, January, 1940, "D.H. Lawrence and His Critics: A Chronological Excursion in Bio-Bibliography" by Lawrence Clark Powell.

The remainder of the items include broadsides, invitations, Christmas cards, journals, announcements, etc.  The "ARTICLES" folder contains various newspaper clippings, with several obits, a biography of Kavin, a couple publication announcements from Dawson's Book Shop, and a nice handwritten note to Mel from Ruth Hoffman.

Overall an interesting, informative, and beautiful set of materials linking two giants of the Southern California book arts world.
