The English Physician Enlarged with Three Hundred and Sixty-Nine Medicines made of English Herbs...

London: Printed for E. Ballard, L. Hawes and Co. W. Johnston.... 1775. 12mo, 17x10cm, [12], 387, [9]pp. Table of diseases (index) at rear. Contemporary sheep, spine ruled in gilt. Headcaps chipped, boards rubbed, joints split at ends, yet quite sound. Few spots to fore edge of page block, else clean internally. Two former owner inscriptions on front pastedown and endpaper. One owner has also added his birthdate to the rear endpaper along with some penmanship samples.

Charming 18th century copy of Culpeper's English Physician, a very popular herbal remedy book first published in 1652 in London.  This copy bears the name and handwriting samples of a 14 year old William Dyer, born in 1791, according to his inscription at the rear.

A book under the same title and attributed to Culpeper would later become the first medical book published in the American colonies in 1708.  Though a few recipes in this American text were Culpeper's, the work was actually a reprinting of a different herbal published in 1690, a tribute to the credibility and familiarity of Culpeper among the colonists.
