Cambridge: Printed for the Author, 1742. First edition. 4to, 26x20cm, [iii], xvi, [1], 356pp. plus [8] table of contents at rear. II Books in one volume, complete with 68 folding plates. Tables, charts, illustrations. From the library of Edward Harbord, 3rd Baron Suffield with bookplate on ffep. Contemporary gilt tooled calf with red morocco spine label, rebacked with original spine and cover laid down. Large paper copy, clean internally with occasional marginal staining, occasional foxing. Few neat annotations in pencil throughout.

First volume of English astronomer, Roger Long's (1680-1770) copiously illustrated, general work on the celestial sciences.  Contains the first II books out of the planned V, the remainder appearing in a second volume many years later, after Long's death, and completed by Richard Dunthorne.  

This copy with an interesting provenance of Edward Lord Suffield (1781-1835), 3rd Baron, a staunch anti-slavery politician who helped pass the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833.
