Never Be a Bookseller

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1929. First edition, limited to 2000 copies. 20x13cm, [VI], XIV, [I]pp. Illustrations, checklist. Blue and white paper wraps, saddle stitched, with paste on label. Some corner wear, toning and light foxing to edges of wraps else clean and nearly fine.

First edition of this short memoir from English author and publisher, David Garnett (1892-1981) published by his friend, Alfred A. Knopf hors d' commerce in an edition of 2000 copies in attractive, variant wrappers.  The piece whimsically touches on Garnett's days as a bookseller with his friends in the Bloomsbury Group, and acts as a tribute to those in the trade.

The checklist of works published does not include his pseudonymous first book, Dope Darling.  It does list perhaps his best known work, an award-winning fantasy published in 1922, Lady Into Fox.

This first edition of this pamphlet, though printed in 2000 copies, is somewhat uncommon.  It was reprinted in a fine edition by the Fleece Press in 1995.
