Řeč a literatura : chvála řeči české

Jaroměř: Jan Loužil, 1927. First edition, limited to 300 copies, this being #200. 16mo, 16x11cm, [4], 20, [1]pp. Printed in red and black throughout. Red paper wrappers, french flaps, with printed paper label, sewn binding. Nearly fine with light wear and toning.

Scarce publication from the influential Czech author and playwright, Karel Čapek (1890-1938), the title roughly translating as "in praise of Czech language and literature."  Čapek is most well known for his contributions to the science fiction genre, including R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots), which was the first work to use the word "robot," and Krakatit, which prognosticated the use of nuclear weapons in 1948, among others.

The colophon states this beautifully printed chapbook was designed and edited by K. Dyrynk, and privately printed on handmade paper by "bibliophile Dr. Jan Loužil in Jaroměř."  Worldcat locates 6 holdings, with just one in America.
