Bookplate of William Struthers Ellis, Fox Hill Farm [Bryn Mawr, PA] on pastedowns in each, ownership signature of Rudulph Ellis on ffep in volume 1. First five volumes in this set from the Civil War Colonel and horse breeding expert, Sanders Dewees Bruce. The American Jockey Club bought the rights to publish from Bruce in 1896, after the publication of the fifth volume in 1889, and continues to maintain the registry today.

Interesting provenance, Rudulph Ellis being a Civil War Inspector General for General Torbert and wounded in Beverly Ford, VA. Later, Ellis became a prominent Philadelphia banker, president of the Fidelity Trust Company, Pennsylvania Trust Company, and others. William Struthers Ellis was his son. Item #4541
