The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge

Berkeley and Los Angeles: University of California Press, 1968. Hardcover. Stated second printing, signed and inscribed by Castaneda to Mary Lou Wilcox, former president of the Mycological Society of San Francisco, and her husband George, on the ffep. 8vo, [6], viii, [4], 196pp. Publisher's gray cloth with sliver lettering to spine in green printed jacket. Very good with some rubbing to cloth at spine ends. Jacket good with wear and rubbing to edges and along folds, with some loss along flaps and at spine ends. Toning and rubbing to front and rear panels with some moisture staining to underside. Wonderful association copy of this controversial work, originally published as an anthropology thesis by Castaneda, but later dubbed by critics to be mainly a work of fiction. The book describes Castaneda's lessons with a Yaqui Indian Sorcerer, Don Juan, and their use of various hallucinogens such as Jimson weed and peyote. This copy from the library of ethnobotanist Mary Lou Wilcox, who served as the president of the Mycological Society of San Francisco from 1970-71, shortly after the book was published. Signed copies of this seminal work from Castaneda are uncommon. Very Good / Good. Item #4351
